| Introduction to Freshwater Fishing Chris Dunnavant is the Angling Education Coordinator for the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and also competed as a professional bass angler from 1997-2002 before joining the Department. Chris will cover the basics of freshwater fishing. Topics include: rods & reels, fishing line, rigs & baits, equipment, where to fish and fishing techniques. If your just getting started in fishing or are relatively new to the sport, this is the seminar for you. |
| Basics of Fly Fishing Erik Sorensen is an avid fly fisherman who comes with 23 years of experience in trout fishing. Erik grew up fly fishing the Adirondack Mountains of upstate NY. Since then, Erik has had the opportunity to fly fish some of the best water the US has to offer. Erik also lived in Colorado where he was able to spend countless hours in some of the most pristine rivers in the world. Erik will bring his knowledge to teach new people basics of fly casting 101, fly fishing for trout, matching the hatch, rigging your line for success, sub-surface techniques, and fly fishing conservation for the next generation. |
| Pond Management 101 – Making the Most of Your Farm Pond Dan Michaelson is a District Fisheries Biologists for the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. One of his specialties is the management of small impoundments (ponds). Key topics will include proper pond layout and design, fish stocking, management strategies, and common problems encountered by pond owners. |
| Bass Fishing Tournament Strategies Floyd Williams is the founder and Pro Staff member of “Salt Willie Bass’n Baits” and is a “Fisher of Men” tournament angler. Floyd will discuss a wide variety of lures and strategies to help you become a better bass angler. |

| Beginning Hunting – How to Get Started Dan Witt, an avid hunter and outdoorsman with 40 years of hunting experience is also the president of the CGI Outdoor Ministry of Hyland Heights Baptist Church along with Dan Wilson, Biologist for the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and avid hunter will cover the basics of how to get started in the exciting sport of hunting. If you, your children, or even grandkids are interested in hunting but aren’t quite sure where to start then this seminar is just what you need. We will discuss how to get the required hunter education classes necessary to get a hunting license, different types of game animals, choices of firearms, hunting gear options, tips for scouting, and resources available to assist with finding areas to hunt. This is an interactive session and questions are welcome. |
| High Heels to Hunting Boots – Getting Her Outdoors (4:30 PM Only) Joella Bates, mother and grandmother, uses her 40+ years of outdoor experiences to share the outdoor lifestyle with others especially women and children. She uses a no-nonsense approach to creating positive outdoor experiences that will leave the new comer wanting more. From “hunting boot or wader-wearing” hard-core huntress, fishing fanatic, and outdoor adventuress to “high-heel wearing” lady, Joella is proof that women and girls can be both. She will share tips and insights that will help you attract and keep your “ladies” and kids wanting more of the experiences offered by the great outdoors. |
| Closer than Close – The Journey to Bow Hunting Africa’s Big 5 (5:30 PM Only) Joella Bates, is a 22 year vetran bow hunter (taken 62 different species using archery gear), 5 time professional 3-D archery World Champion, and the first and only lady to successfully bow hunt Africa’s Big 5 (feat was accomplished in 27 days in 2009). She will share with you her hair-raising intense journey using a DVD teaser and slide presentation that promises to keep you spell-bound. From shooting a 91 pound compound bow, to sitting in the dark over a leopard, to treking the Kalahari Desert sands, the trip was an adrenaline junkies dream and Joella found herself closer than close to Africa’s dangers and mystic. |
| Archery and Bowhunting: Expand your Possibilities and your Seasons Doug Gilmer is a 1990 graduate of Liberty University as well as the graduate school of Virginia Tech where he earned his Master’s Degree in Natural Resources. Doug is an accomplished outdoor writer and media representative serving on a number of national hunting and shooting pro-staffs including Bowtech, Mossy Oak, TRU Ball, Thompson Center Arms, and Nikon. Doug also works with Kicking Bear, a national foundation that reaches young people through the sports of archery and bowhunting. With the increase in deer populations and urban archery seasons more and more people are turning to bowhunting. The sport of archery itself is a tremendous athletic equalizer in that anyone can participate and do well. However, bowhunting should not be limited only to deer. Drawing on his big game hunting and outfitting experience Doug will discuss bowhunting a variety of game from small game, to turkeys, bear, moose, hogs and even the rapidly expanding and action packed sport of bowfishing. He will cover what it takes to get involved in these pursuits, equipment considerations, practice, shooting, youth bowhunting equipment, myths, and misconceptions. This will hopefully be an interactive seminar with much discussion. |
| Elk Hunting Avid elk hunter, Vic DiCenzo knows many hunters have dreamed of one day harvesting a majestic elk in the Rocky Mountains. Fortunately, there has never been a better time to hunt elk. This seminar will cover many aspects of elk hunting including the use of calling, hunting techniques, and equipment. Another focus of the seminar will be planning a do-it-yourself hunt and getting physically prepared for hunting elk in the rugged Rocky Mountains. |
| The Life and Times of White-tailed Deer(4:30 PM Only) Matt Knox, Virginia Deer Project Coordinator for the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, will present various aspects of the whitetail deer’s world. This talk will focus primarily on whitetail research studies that shed light on topics such as a reproduction, home ranges, daily activity periods, rutting activities, antler development, vision, hearing, food requirements, and social behavior. Knowing more about the game you pursue can increase the odds of scoring but will also expand your appreciation of this incredible animal. |
| Disease and Parasites of White-tailed Deer (5:30 PM Only) Matt Knox, Virginia Deer Project Coordinator for the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, will discuss some of the most common diseases and parasites of white-tailed deer in Virginia. Included will be diseases and parasites that Virginia deer hunters might commonly see or find. Special emphasis will be put on Hemorrhagic Disease (HD) and Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD). HD has been traditionally and is still currently the most important deer disease in Virginia but CWD may well become the most important deer disease in Virginia in the future |
| How to Score and Age a Buck Jim Bowman, Wildlife Biologist for the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries will show how to determine the age of hunter-harvested deer. If you ever wondered how to age that buck or doe you harvested, this workshop will give you the skills you need to do it yourself. Jim will also demonstrate the basics of how to measure and score deer antlers. |
| Hints on being successful in your quest for trophy Moose and Black Bear (5:30 PM Only) John Nissley, the Nissley’s family own and operate the Katahdin Valley Outfitters Sport camp in the Sherman/Patten area of Maine. The Nissley family is synonymous with Maine Black bear and trophy Bull Moose. This is a two part seminar by a Registered Maine Guide on how to locate, call and have a trophy Bull Moose close enough for an easy bow shot. You will also be given tips on Black Bear hunting from one of Maine’s most successful Black Bear Hunters. |

| Introduction to Basic Canoeing Barry Tyree has 32 years experience paddling white water, lakes, ocean waters, swamps, and creeks. Barry has also been a paddling instructor for guide services. This seminar will cover basic canoeing techniques with an emphasis on stream paddling but will provide the basics for canoeing in any type of water. Learn eight important paddle strokes necessary for proper canoe handling, how to read fast water and how to determine the best route selection while navigating through fast water. Find out how to avoid capsizing and what to do in the event of a capsize along with other basic safety tips. |
